What is Biblical Marriage?

What does the Word of God say about Marriage?

I received an email from Jarrod Scott, who is Chairman of the Christian Life and Public Affairs committee of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. I was humbly moved by his comments and would like to share them with you on our blog today.
“If you're like me, you may be hesitant to be involved in political matters. After all, the heart of our society’s problems is not politics, but the human heart. We know that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the solution for our society, as well as the hearts of men and women. This focus on missions and ministry should be the centerpiece of our churches and state convention. The gospel will always provide counterpoints to societal norms. These counterpoints will cause Christians, and as a result the church, to look different than society. I believe that for our time and place in history, the primary counterpoint for believers will be in regards to the” (definition of marriage).
“If we accept any alternative to the biblical definition of marriage we can expect negative social consequences. Therefore our reluctance to engage in the social discourse on the politically charged definition of marriage must be overcome. If our state redefines marriage, from the traditional understanding, it may eventually lead to laws that infringe upon religious liberty.”

What does the Word of God say about Marriage? God’s Word is clear.

  1. Marriage was God’s Provision  (Genesis 2:24)
God the Father ordained marriage. This is a summary of the detailed account of the creation of man and woman in Genesis 1:26ff. God provided a helpmate suitable for man He says…God’s provision was not another man for man but a woman.
It was God’s ordained idea to make the proper helper suitable. Everyone here has a Dad or Mom that God used to create you. Not saying they are perfect, but it was God’s provision for creation to continue.  God the Father ordained Marriage, but goes on to explain it further…
  1. Marriage was God’s Plan (Mark 10:1-12)
God the Son explained marriage. God wanted this to be a permanent relationship that reflected His relationship with us. Of course we have messed that up with sin and our rebellion against God’s standards, but it was and is God’s provision…His perfect plan…for us. Jesus in Mark 10 is dealing with the question of divorce. We all have dealt with that issue in our society. In our families, all around us.  Divorce was not God’s plan. God does not want us to divorce. (We can all come up with great reasons for it I know) But divorce is a Sin against God, (but God provided for all sin to be forgiven for those who seek forgiveness) but who wants this Sin to be a desire. (In Weddings…Till Death you do part, not divorce) It happens, but it really is no one’s desire.
God the Father ordained Marriage, God the Son explained marriage, but finally…
God the Holy Spirit detailed marriage.
  1. Marriage was God’s Pattern (Ephesians 5:22-33)
Now we are going to summarized with our main text in Eph. 5
So interesting that God the Holy Spirit speaking through Paul, reminds the Church of the importance of Marriage and the definition of Marriage…again repeating what God the Father said in Gen. and what God the Son said in Mark, and now the Church must say the Truth of what God’s Word says…
Marriage is when one man leaves his father and mother, and a woman her home
and the two are united as one flesh.
That is a Biblical Marriage, according to God’s Word.

There is also a great sermon on the subject that I encourage you to view by a Pastor in Louisville, Kentucky. It can be found at: http://vimeo.com/14937963. Great information on Human Sexuality and the Gospel.

As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and God’s Word, we need to be informed and prepared to share the Truth in Love. Make sure you are!
